What You Need to Know (Score 2.0)

Era 4's scientific and technological achievements are inseparable from their political and military contexts. The 20th century produced the most transformative technologies in human history β€” and the most destructive. Radar, nuclear weapons, the internet, satellites, and vaccines were all products of wartime or Cold War competition. Understanding these technologies means understanding the political systems that funded and shaped them.

  • Nuclear Weapons: The atomic bomb, first tested in July 1945 and dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, used nuclear fission to release enormous energy. The bombs killed ~200,000 people immediately. Nuclear weapons fundamentally changed warfare and international relations: the logic of "mutually assured destruction" (MAD) shaped the Cold War.
  • Manhattan Project: The U.S. government's secret project to develop atomic weapons during WWII (~1942–1945). Employed ~130,000 people, including many of the world's leading physicists. The project produced the atomic bomb at a cost of ~$2 billion (about $28 billion today).
  • The Internet (ARPANET): Originally a U.S. Defense Department project (ARPANET, 1969) to create a communication network that could survive nuclear attack. Became the public internet in the 1990s. Now the infrastructure for global communication, commerce, and social interaction.
  • Satellite Technology: Military satellites for reconnaissance and communication developed during the Cold War now provide GPS navigation, weather forecasting, and telecommunications that are invisible but essential infrastructure for daily life.
  • Nuclear Energy: The same fission reaction used in nuclear weapons can be used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants. After WWII, nuclear energy was promoted as "atoms for peace" β€” an alternative to fossil fuels. Today, nuclear power generates ~10% of the world's electricity.
  • Green Revolution: The 1940s–1970s development of high-yield crop varieties, synthetic fertilizers, and pesticides that dramatically increased agricultural output globally. Credited with preventing mass famine; also criticized for environmental damage, dependence on fossil-fuel-derived fertilizers, and concentration of agricultural power.
  • Medical Technology: The 20th century produced antibiotics (penicillin, 1928), vaccines (polio, 1955; smallpox eradicated 1980), and imaging technology (X-ray, MRI). These achievements extended average human lifespan from ~50 years at 1900 to ~70+ years globally.
  • Climate Science: The scientific consensus that human COβ‚‚ emissions are causing global warming was established by the 1970s and overwhelmingly confirmed by subsequent research. Climate change is itself a technological and scientific problem produced by Era 3–4 industrialization.

A student who can score a 2.0: A student who can state that the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan in 1945 and that it was very powerful β€” without yet analyzing what the decision to use it revealed about the relationship between technological achievement and political decision-making, or how nuclear weapons changed the logic of international relations.


The Standard (Score 3.0)

WH.6_12.1 β€” Analyze historical achievements related to science and technology (Era 4)

To meet this standard, you must analyze the political and social context that produced a technology, not just describe what it does. In Era 4, almost every major technology was shaped by war, Cold War competition, or the profit motive β€” and understanding a technology means understanding those shaping forces.

3.0 Example: A student achieves a 3.0 by analyzing the decision to drop the atomic bomb as both a technological and political question. The Manhattan Project produced the technology; the political decision to use it was shaped by multiple factors: (1) the stated military rationale β€” avoiding a costly land invasion of Japan; (2) unstated factors β€” demonstrating U.S. power to the Soviet Union at the dawn of the Cold War; (3) the racial dimension β€” the bomb was used against a non-white enemy in the Pacific theater but was not used in Europe, where it was also available by war's end. The student analyzes not just what the technology was, but what it meant politically β€” as an act of war, as a geopolitical message, and as a racial choice β€” and evaluates these claims using primary sources (Truman's diary, Stimson's memos, Japanese survivor accounts).

The Difference: A 2.0 student knows the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A 3.0 student analyzes why it was dropped β€” the full political and military context β€” and uses primary sources to evaluate competing explanations.


Going Further (Score 4.0)

To reach a 4.0, you must evaluate the long-term consequences of Era 4 technological achievements and assess the ethical frameworks used to justify them.

Transfer Tasks: 1. Technology and ethics: The scientists who built the first nuclear weapons included many who immediately regretted doing so (J. Robert Oppenheimer: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds"). Analyze: what ethical frameworks did the scientists and decision-makers use to justify developing and using the bomb? Were those frameworks adequate? What ethical framework should govern the development of dangerous technologies? 2. Technology and inequality: The Green Revolution increased food production globally β€” but its benefits were distributed unequally (wealthy farmers with access to fertilizers and irrigation benefited; small farmers in the developing world were often displaced). Analyze: Is this pattern of unequal distribution of technological benefits and costs a recurring pattern in Era 4? 3. Technology and surveillance: The internet was designed for military communication resilience; it became a commercial platform for global connection; it has now also become a surveillance infrastructure. Analyze: When a technology is developed for one purpose and repurposed for another, who is responsible for the consequences of the repurposing?

4.0 Example: A student argues that climate science is the most important technological/scientific achievement of Era 4 β€” not because it produced a technology, but because it produced knowledge of a civilizational threat that human civilization has proven unable to act on despite 50+ years of warning. The student evaluates: Why have societies been unable to respond adequately to climate science's findings? Is this a failure of the science (unclear), the political systems (compromised by fossil fuel interests), the economic systems (externalized costs), or human psychology (inability to act on long-term threats)? The student uses primary sources β€” IPCC reports, fossil fuel industry internal documents showing they knew about climate risks β€” to support the analysis.

  • Night β€” Elie Wiesel β€” Not a text about technology directly, but Wiesel's memoir reveals how technology was deployed in the Holocaust: industrial-scale killing required industrial-scale logistics (railroads, crematoriums, bureaucratic record-keeping). The Holocaust was, in part, a technological achievement β€” which raises the question of what "achievement" means.
  • 1984 β€” George Orwell β€” Orwell's novel imagined a future of surveillance technology used for political control. Written in 1948, it anticipated systems now largely in place. Read the "telescreens" and "thought police" sections: how close is Orwell's fiction to contemporary surveillance technology?

You are a committee reviewing the decision to develop (choose one): the atomic bomb, or a contemporary technology (facial recognition, lethal autonomous weapons). Present: the benefits claimed, the costs, and your committee's verdict.
6 Portfolio Annotation Select a previous project about Era 4. Write a 200-word reflection: What technology shaped the events you studied? Did your original work analyze the political context that produced it, and the ethics of its development and use?

Analyze from three perspectives: the scientists who built it, the decision-makers who used it, and the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Write a 1-page argument: was building the bomb an ethical technological achievement or an ethical failure?
  2. Internet: Military Tool to Global Infrastructure β€” Trace the path from ARPANET (1969) to the 2026 internet. For each major development, identify: What was the intended use? What was the actual use? Who controlled it? Who benefited? Build a visual timeline with a 1-paragraph argument about whether the internet has fulfilled its democratic potential.
  3. Green Revolution Winners and Losers β€” Research the Green Revolution's effects in one specific country (India, Mexico, or the Philippines). Analyze: who benefited, who was harmed, and what the long-term environmental consequences were. Write a 1-page brief arguing whether the Green Revolution should be considered a success or a failure.
