What This Episode Is About¶
Green asks why the Industrial Revolution started in Britain, in the late 18th century, and not somewhere else, earlier. His answer involves multiple converging factors: coal deposits close to the surface and navigable rivers to transport it; the Enclosure Acts that drove peasants off common land and into cities (creating a labor supply); colonial capital that funded early factories; patent law protecting inventorsβ profits; and a culture that, unusually for the time, celebrated commercial wealth. He then echoes his Agricultural Revolution argument: the Industrial Revolution made Britain vastly wealthier in aggregate while making many individual workersβ lives worse. Early factory workers faced 14-hour days, child labor, and conditions that shortened lives. Surplus was extracted upward. This is the contradiction that Karl Marx was watching when he wrote the Communist Manifesto β a text that will not make sense without this episode.

The factory system the Industrial Revolution created is still the operating model for most manufacturing. The questions it raised β who owns the surplus produced by workers, what conditions are acceptable, what obligations does an employer have to employees β are the questions behind every contemporary debate about minimum wage, labor unions, gig economy classification, and Amazon warehouse conditions. The specific argument that Green makes β that aggregate GDP growth can mask widespread individual decline β is the argument economists make about contemporary inequality. The Industrial Revolution didnβt end. It moved.
