What You Need to Know (Score 2.0)¶
Era 3 is the era when science stopped being a tool of religion and started becoming a tool of human mastery over the natural world. The Scientific Revolution, Industrial Revolution, and Age of Exploration were all driven by new technologies β and those technologies were driven by new ways of thinking about how the world worked.
- Scientific Revolution (~1543β1687 CE): The period when European thinkers fundamentally challenged ancient and religious authority on questions of nature, replacing observation-and-authority with observation-and-experiment. Key figures: Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton.
- Heliocentric Model: Copernicus's 1543 theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun β challenging the geocentric (Earth-centered) model that the Catholic Church had endorsed. Galileo's telescopic observations confirmed it; he was placed under house arrest.
- Scientific Method: The systematic process of forming a hypothesis, designing an experiment, collecting data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. Francis Bacon and RenΓ© Descartes formalized the method; it is still the foundation of modern science.
- Printing Press (legacy): By Era 3, Gutenberg's 1440 invention had transformed scientific communication β scientific findings could be published and replicated across Europe. Newton's Principia Mathematica (1687) was only possible because printing made international scientific exchange possible.
- Industrial Revolution (~1760β1840 CE): The transformation from hand production to machine production, centered in England. Key technologies: the steam engine (James Watt, 1769), spinning jenny, power loom, steam-powered railroads.
- Steam Engine: The mechanical engine that converted heat (from burning coal) into motion. The steam engine powered factories, railroads, and ships β transforming manufacturing, transportation, and global trade.
- Navigation Technology: The Age of Exploration required new navigational tools: the caravel (a Portuguese sailing ship that could sail against the wind), the astrolabe (for measuring latitude), improved magnetic compass use, and better cartography (mapmaking). These technologies made long-distance ocean voyages possible.
- Germ Theory: Louis Pasteur's 1859β1861 experiments proved that microorganisms caused disease β replacing the miasma theory (bad air causes disease). Germ theory enabled modern medicine: vaccination, antiseptic surgery, pasteurization of milk.

A student who can score a 2.0: A student who can state that Newton discovered gravity and that James Watt improved the steam engine β without yet analyzing what these achievements changed about how humans related to the natural world, or why they happened in this particular era and not earlier.
The Standard (Score 3.0)¶
WH.6_12.1 β Analyze historical achievements related to science and technology (Era 3)
To meet this standard, you must analyze what a technological or scientific achievement made possible β and why it happened when and where it did. In Era 3, a key theme is the relationship between scientific thinking and political/economic power: the Industrial Revolution made Britain the world's dominant power; the Scientific Revolution challenged religious authority.
3.0 Example: A student achieves a 3.0 by analyzing why the Industrial Revolution started in England and not France, China, or India. The student identifies the specific conditions in England that made it possible: (1) coal deposits close to the surface in Wales and the Midlands, providing cheap fuel; (2) enclosure movement that drove peasants off the land into cities, creating a labor force; (3) strong patent law that incentivized invention; (4) a merchant class with capital to invest in machinery; (5) an empire that provided raw materials (cotton from India and the American South) and markets for finished goods. The student argues that the Industrial Revolution was not an inevitable result of human ingenuity β it happened in England because England had the specific economic and political conditions that made it profitable.
The Difference: A 2.0 student knows the steam engine was important and that the Industrial Revolution started in England. A 3.0 student analyzes WHY it started in England β what conditions made it possible, and why those conditions didn't exist elsewhere at the same time.
Going Further (Score 4.0)¶
To reach a 4.0, you must evaluate the costs of technological progress β who paid for the Industrial Revolution, what was destroyed to make it possible, and what lessons this holds for technological change today.
Transfer Tasks: 1. Technology and empire: The Industrial Revolution gave Britain a massive military and economic advantage that it used to build a global empire. Analyze the relationship between industrial technology and imperial power β was empire a side effect of industrialization, or was industrialization only possible because of empire (raw materials, markets)? 2. Science vs. religion: Galileo's house arrest and the Scopes Trial (1925) are both cases of science conflicting with religious authority. Analyze what is similar and what is different about these two cases. Is science-religion conflict inevitable, or is it a product of specific historical conditions? 3. Who paid? The Industrial Revolution produced enormous wealth β and required child labor, 16-hour workdays, deadly factory conditions, and environmental destruction. Analyze: was the Industrial Revolution a positive development for humanity? Who benefited, who paid the costs, and does your answer change depending on whose perspective you take?
4.0 Example: A student argues that the Scientific Revolution and the Industrial Revolution together created the conditions for both the greatest material improvements in human life (medicine, food security, transportation) AND the greatest threats to human survival (climate change, nuclear weapons, industrial pollution). The student evaluates whether this trade-off was inevitable β could the benefits have been achieved without the harms? β and argues that the historical answer to this question shapes how we think about technological development today.

- Galileo vs. the Church: A Primary Source Analysis β Research Galileo's trial (1633). Find primary sources from both the Church's perspective and Galileo's writings. Analyze: what was really at stake β was this about astronomy, or about who had authority to define truth?
- The Costs of Industrialization: Data Brief β Research the working conditions, wages, child labor, and life expectancy of English factory workers during the Industrial Revolution. Build a data-driven brief arguing whether workers' lives were better or worse during industrialization than before.
