Scoring follows the official NDSBL World History Proficiency Scales β€” not the examples on this page. Proficient (3.0) for Era 2: Middle Ages and the Renaissance means:

  • Explain the causes and effects of Medieval social structures using primary and secondary sources.
  • Explain how the relationship between religious and political bodies impacted the social, cultural, or economic developments of individuals.
  • Explain the emergence of cultural interaction between Europe and other civilizations.

What You Need to Know (Score 2.0)

The "Dark Ages" label is a myth invented by Renaissance scholars who wanted to make their own era look better. The medieval period produced remarkable technologies β€” some entirely original, some preserved and transmitted from the ancient world through Islamic scholars, Byzantine copyists, and monastic libraries.

  • Feudalism: The medieval political and economic system in which lords granted land (fiefs) to vassals in exchange for military service. Not a technology itself, but shaped which technologies got funded and which didn't.
  • Water Mill / Windmill: Technologies for converting natural energy (water flow, wind) into mechanical work. Water mills ground grain, pumped water, and powered early industrial processes. Windmills spread from Persia to Europe in the medieval period.
  • Heavy Plow (Moldboard Plow): An iron-bladed plow that could cut through the heavy clay soils of Northern Europe, enabling more land to be farmed. The heavy plow transformed Northern European agriculture and contributed to population growth in the 10th–12th centuries.
  • Three-Field System: A crop rotation system dividing farmland into three sections: one growing a spring crop, one a fall crop, one left fallow. Increased agricultural output by ~50% compared to two-field systems β€” a medieval "Green Revolution."
  • Islamic Golden Age (~750–1258 CE): The period when the Abbasid Caliphate centered in Baghdad was the world's leading center of science, mathematics, and philosophy. Scholars like Al-Khwarizmi (algebra), Ibn Sina/Avicenna (medicine), and Al-Haytham (optics) made foundational advances.
  • Algebra: The branch of mathematics dealing with equations and unknown quantities. The word comes from the Arabic al-jabr, from Al-Khwarizmi's The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing (~820 CE).
  • Printing Press: Johannes Gutenberg's movable type printing press (~1440 CE) dramatically reduced the cost of producing books, enabling mass literacy and making the Protestant Reformation possible. (Movable type was invented in China centuries earlier.)
  • Gothic Architecture: A medieval European architectural style using the pointed arch, flying buttress, and ribbed vault β€” allowing cathedrals to be built taller and with larger windows than Romanesque predecessors. A synthesis of engineering and religious purpose.

A student who can score a 2.0: A student who can state that the printing press was invented around 1440 by Gutenberg and that it made books cheaper to produce β€” without yet analyzing what specific social and political changes that caused (mass literacy, Reformation, spread of scientific ideas).


The Standard (Score 3.0)

WH.6_12.1 β€” Analyze historical achievements related to science and technology (Era 2)

To meet this standard, you must analyze the significance of a medieval technology: what it achieved, what social or political changes it caused, and why it matters for understanding the era. In Era 2, a key theme is the preservation and transmission of knowledge β€” the Islamic world and Byzantine Empire kept Greek science alive during a period when Western Europe largely lost it.

3.0 Example: A student achieves a 3.0 by analyzing how Al-Haytham's Book of Optics (~1011 CE) achieved something the ancient Greeks had not: a correct theory of how vision works (light enters the eye rather than emanating from it), accompanied by experimental evidence produced through controlled experiments. The student explains both the scientific achievement (empirical optics) and its transmission: the book was translated into Latin in the 12th century and influenced Roger Bacon and later Renaissance scientists like Kepler. Without Al-Haytham, modern optics, the scientific method, and eventually the telescope might not have developed when they did.

The Difference: A 2.0 student knows the Islamic Golden Age produced important scientists. A 3.0 student analyzes one specific achievement, explains what was novel about it, and traces how it was transmitted to and transformed later science.


Going Further (Score 4.0)

To reach a 4.0, you must evaluate the conditions that enabled or suppressed technological achievement β€” why did the Islamic world lead global science from 750–1258, and what happened when those conditions changed?

Transfer Tasks: 1. Conditions for scientific flourishing: The Abbasid Caliphate actively funded the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, hiring translators and scholars from across the known world. What specific conditions (political, economic, ideological) enabled this? What can modern institutions learn from it? 2. Technology and social change: The printing press spread ideas that destabilized the Catholic Church's information monopoly. Analyze the printing press as a political technology β€” not just a communication tool. How does controlling information relate to controlling power? What's the modern parallel? 3. Technology and empire: The Mongol destruction of Baghdad (1258) and its library at the House of Wisdom ended the Islamic Golden Age. Analyze how political events (conquest) can destroy technological and intellectual infrastructure β€” and what that tells us about the fragility of civilizational achievement.

4.0 Example: A student argues that the Islamic Golden Age was made possible by three specific conditions β€” a unified empire with a common language (Arabic), a religious tradition that encouraged the seeking of knowledge, and a political will to fund translation projects β€” and that the loss of those conditions (Mongol invasion, later political fragmentation) explains why the Islamic world lost its scientific leadership. The student then argues that the same conditions-based analysis applies to contemporary science funding debates.

  1. "Forgotten Scientists" Profile Collection β€” Research three medieval scientists from the Islamic Golden Age who are rarely taught in Western textbooks. Create a one-page profile for each: biography, key contributions, where their work was transmitted, and what modern science owes them.
  2. The Printing Press's Political Impact β€” Build a visual argument showing how the printing press changed the political landscape of Europe between 1440 and 1560. Include: what it made possible (mass Bibles, pamphlets, Protestant tracts), who it threatened (the Church), and one specific historical event that might not have happened without it.
  3. Medieval Agricultural Revolution Brief β€” Write a 1-page research brief arguing that the heavy plow and three-field system together constituted a "medieval agricultural revolution" that enabled the population growth that made the Renaissance possible.
