A postwar boom built a modern consumer culture — cars, radio, advertising, and buying on credit. Culture surged: the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes, jazz), flappers, the 'New Woman.' But tensions ran underneath: Prohibition and organized crime, the Scopes Trial, the 1924 immigration quotas, a second Red Scare, and a revived KKK. It all ended in the 1929 crash. The turning point — modern consumer America and the cultural backlash against it.
