Neutrality ended at Pearl Harbor (Dec 7, 1941). Total war meant massive mobilization: war production, women in the workforce (Rosie the Riveter), rationing — and Japanese American internment (Executive Order 9066). Abroad: D-Day, island-hopping in the Pacific, the Holocaust, and the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The federal government and America's global power expanded enormously. The turning point — the U.S. emerges as a superpower.
